Photo-expedition success! I always struggle with landscapes. In particular, I find it hard to achieve a satisfying visual depth. Some photographers seem to be able to craft a good image no matter what type of landscape they're shooting, but I have noticed the two most common methods for emphasizing depth are either having a repetition that leads to a vanishing point or having a foreground that is lit differently than the background. Silhouettes or spot lit subjects against contrasting backgrounds are easy, if you control the lighting. If you don't, then you have to wait for it to happen naturally. Given that my assistant is under 2yo, I have to happen upon usefully lit landscapes, or return different areas at specific times of day. I've learned that, right now, there are some good spots for shooting between 8:20am and 9:20am.

Ben and I went out around 8:40am, while Sam was sleeping. Ben and I see the hill in the first picture when we take the scenic route home from taking Sam to work; I thought it would be a good first destination. My goal was, for at least the weekend, to improve the quality of shots going up on the 365 blog. There was an amazing blue haze that the sun was slowly dissipating. So I took a few shots from inside the car, and then drove off to a location that looked out onto the lake.

Ben says I'm done writing now.

The rest of the series is here.
